Zulu Medicine Market in Durban

Next to the Victoria Street Market is the Zulu Medicine Market where you can have an informative tour of “Inyanga (Doctors) lane”. The Zulu Medicine Market is a unique place where Zulu culture has survived in the modern urban environment.

A Crazy Day at Durban Market

A Crazy Day at Durban Market

The Adventures of Ben

Durban’s Victoria Street Market is a great place to visit, there’s lots of things to look at. I enjoyed pancakes for lunch there and bought a Zulu cultural outfit with shoes made from car tyres! Whatever you do guys, do not get spice in your eyes, that was not cool! This was a crazy day that I tell everyone about often. You should check it out.

***Not recommended to visit the muti market on your own, chat to Chris or Norma at www.blue-dolphin-ts.co.za and they can arrange a visit for you. They know a whole bunch of cool places in Durban and surrounds

*** Victoria Street Market has underground parking or catch an Uber to the front entrance.

An Idea of Africa

An Idea of Africa

The Victoria Street Market is a busy place and you have to seek and deal for what you wish. Very kind and lovely Indian sellers explain to you how to use spices. Explore traditional handcrafts of the Zulu culture as well as from the greater Africa in general. You have to deal the price and it can be funny for most, but annoying for others who are not used to that. Take a cab to go there. We spent 1.30 hour.

Definitely A Cultural Wonder

Definitely A Cultural Wonder

If you want to see the penetration of Zulu culture in the city go to the Muti Bridge at Victoria Street Market. I did it with a friend who is familiar with the traders and the stuff being traded. He offered me background to the market, the bridge and the merchandise. It was extremely educational. The number of sangomas and herbalists in the market is astounding so were the various things for sale. Approach with curiosity and an open mind. There’s always something to learn and this is even more true in the market.
