I’ll be out exploring the Station Drive Precinct, Durban’s first dedicated creative district. It’s home to local businesses, studios, can’t-miss craft food and beverage spots, and hosts a monthly “First Thursdays” event with art, street food, and live music.

During the day, I’ll be checking out the Victoria Street Market, where the melding of Afro-Indian cultures comes to life most vividly. Roaming the bazaar, I can find anything from Indian spices, curry powders, and incense to fresh fish and seafood on the first floor. Afterwards, I’m heading to the KwaMuhle Museum on Bram Fischer Road, which educates visitors on life in Durban from the start of Apartheid to now, discussing the impacts of its harsh systems of urban and labor control, and highlights local art.

Durban has its own Indian district. Sadly they don’t have a catchy name like Chinatown, but they do have Victoria Street Market. Kurtas, saris, incense, other fabrics, spices and pretty much anything appropriately Indian is available here. The place is a thrill for the senses, with over a hundred and fifty stalls filling the air with sharp, spicy scents. Apart from spices, there’s a market for seafood, meat, fruits and vegetables. And naturally, the Indian atmosphere wouldn’t be complete if you didn’t get a chance to bargain so go ahead and test your negotiation skills against the vendors. The atmosphere here is heady with exotic energy. Close by, you’ll find the Grey Market, which has more Indian shops and architecture. Make sure you tuck into an Atom Bomb curry.

The 100 year old markets are famed for their East meets West produce, with stalls laden with perfectly formed pyramids of jewel coloured spices. Watch Maya, Alice and Saunders as they explore the market, filled with aromas of spices and incense. Plus see what they think of the traditional Durban dish, ‘Bunny Chow’, a hollowed out bread roll filled with fragrant and spicy curry. Tasty!
